How do I view a film?

You can search for a film using the search box:
Search box image
or the Advanced Search facility.

If a thumbnail image appears next to any of the search results, this indicates that the film has been digitised and is available for online viewing. Click on the image to view the film.

You can also view films from any of the featured Lightboxes.

There is no charge for online viewing.

When do I need to register?

You need to Register or Login if you want to access all the functionality of the site.

You need to register if you want to create and save a Lightbox or download a film. A valid email address is required.

You do not need to register for free online viewing.

How do I download a time-coded screener of a film for commercial use?

Register or Login – then use the Download option on the individual Film Record to download the complete film, or use the Basket option to select a number of films to download, or use the Create a Clip facility and the Basket option to select sections to download.

Free downloads for commercial use have time-code, film reference number and watermark in-vision throughout the film or selected clip. Such downloads are for evaluation and scene selection purposes by commercial users.

To ensure the smooth running of the site, free commercial downloads are limited to 20 film records in a 24 hour period for each registered user.

How do I download a film for private use?

Register or Login - then add the required film or films to your Basket and follow the ordering process.

Private use downloads have a small watermark in the bottom right hand corner of the image throughout the film.

Private use downloads are charged at £20.00 for each 20 minutes, or part thereof, of the total running time.

How do I add a film to my Basket?

If on the Search Results page, click on the (+) Basket icon underneath the thumbnail image of the required film to add the film to your Basket.

If on the Film Record page, click on the Add to Basket facility to add the film to your Basket.

Which download formats are available?

Downloads are available either as a Windows Media or QuickTime file with a bitrate of 1 Mbit/sec.

What is the purpose of a Lightbox?

A Lightbox allows you to compile a selection of films and/or clips of interest.

You can share your Lightbox, keep your Lightbox private, or make it public and available to other users of the site. You can also share your Lightbox by email.

All of the Lightbox facilities are free of charge.

How do I create a Lightbox?

Register or Login to create and save a Lightbox.

If on the Search Results page, click on the (+) Lightbox under the thumbnail image - then choose to add the item to an existing Lightbox or to create a new one.

If on the Film Record page, click on the Add to Lightbox facility - then choose to add the item to an existing Lightbox or to create a new one.

How do I select clips?

The Create a Clip facility on the Film Record page allows you to select clips – follow the instructions.

Register or Login to save the clip(s) to a Lightbox.

Once I have my time-coded screener, how do I obtain a broadcast master?

For broadcast masters for commercial use please contact Film Archive – Commercial Enquiries with your requirements including the film reference number and relevant time-codes.

There is a separate technical charge for the supply of broadcast masters.

broadcast quality material is not available via this site.

Why is the entire collection not available for online viewing?

The majority of the Museum's Film Archive collection is held on 35mm film and digitising film material is a lengthy and costly process. Given the size of the collection, we are unable to make the entire collection available at this time.

Additional films will be added to the site as and when digital copies are available.
