Title: MALTA - SHACKLETON [Main] Film Number: COI 657
Summary: Film showing the importance of the Shackleton in Malta. Date: 1969(ca)
Description: Film consists of several scenes: boats in the harbour; military instruction; aircraft in flight; air-sea rescue; shots of the Avro Shackleton's interior and of the aircraft in flight; a beach in Malta where it is hoped to create one of the first marinas in the Mediterranean; a girl who has made a name for herself in Mediterranean ocean racing for herself, and the Marine Operations Commander on the Royal Air Force. The exercise in air-sea rescue shows how a self-inflating dinghy and everything necessary for survival is provided for those who are to be rescued. The rescue launch goes to them at the same time and is manned by air force sailors who belong to the marine branch of the Royal Air Force. The film concludes by showing how the Shackletons also have a more dramatic role - the detection and destruction of enemy submarines - and indicates that soon the Shackletons are to be replaced by the Nimrod. Running Time: Footage: 285 ft; Running time: 8 mins
