Other titles:THE ATLANTIC COMMUNITY - INTRODUCING THE UNITED KINGDOM [Alternative Title]
NATO DOCUMENTARIES [Allocated Series Title]
Summary: This American funded documentary, profiling the United Kingdom, was made as part of ‘The Atlantic Community’ series. The intension of the documentary was to educate other members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) about British culture, politics, the post-war economic recovery and the role of its military within the NATO defensive framework.
Description: Britain’s island status forms a key part of the documentary’s overall narrative. It is used to define the nation’s character, to illustrate its role in global history and the nature of its economy. The maritime activities of fisherman and the vital lifeline of the Merchant Navy draw a link with the Royal Navy Yacht, Britannia. Returning with Queen Elizabeth II from a trip around “some of her realms and territoriesâ€, the Britannia symbolises a more ceremonial role for Britain compared with its colonialist past.
It is affirmed that “Britain is an island, but a European islandâ€. With the Empire diminished, Britain is shown to be much more engaged in ensuring the security of its NATO allies, through a profile of the military arsenal.
Economically, Britain is seen as a powerhouse of industry and manufacturing. It is upheld as the world’s third largest producer of steel and largest exporter of automobiles. The great variety of its major industries include: coal, oil refining, ship building and locomotive engineering; but also include some more advanced technologies such as atomic power and jet engine production.
Other pastimes, jobs and institutions used to define the United Kingdom include: the NHS, football, agriculture, education and the arts.
