- Summary: UNTV follows the Royal Highland Fusiliers, stationed in Tesanj. The duties of the RHF vary from escorting aid convoys to negotiating between Croat and Bosniak civil organisations.
- Description: Winter scenes at Tesanj, at the northern end of the Maglaj finger. Royal Highland Fusiliers on night duty then preparing for the day ahead and boarding an armoured personnel carrier. Their main duty is to protect convoys on their way into Tesanj. Interview with Major Alistair Reed, A. Coy, Royal Highland Fusiliers, who explains that UNPROFOR began to escort convoys in this area in reaction to the shelling of a convoy at an UNHCR distribution centre two months ago that resulted in the deaths of two civilian workers. Footage of convoys accompanied by FV107 Scimitars to the Tusanj crossroads. Corporal MacDonald describes what happens in the event of the convoy coming under fire and the protection offered to the drivers of the convoy by Warriors (Tracked Armoured Vehicles). The convoy and its escort arrive at the Tesanj distribution centre. Izudin Ahmetlić, Director of Social Affairs in Tesanj, says that concerns about fuel have led to the re-organisation of aid distribution and Tesanj will now be supplied from the centre in Zenica. Aid is currently getting to Tesanj and there is enough food for everyone. Royal Highland Fusiliers carry out exploratory patrols within the area to make contact with isolated villages. Sergeant Thomas McGaw explains that they check the cleanliness of the villages’ water supplies and their medical officer assesses the relative health of the villages. The soldiers also carry out any repairs that they are able to do. Shots of the Fusiliers stapling waterproofing plastic to the windows of a damaged school building so that more classrooms are inhabitable. Interview with Ismet Skopljak, Community President of Tešanika, who says that before UNPROFOR repaired the classrooms the 700 pupils had to have lessons in three shifts because that was the only way they could physically be accommodated. Sergeant Cameron says that they can help communities that are too poor to help themselves. Last year the Bosniaks and the Croats fought together against the Serbs but today they are divided over a federation issue. Those in the Usora area are demanding their own municipality. Major Alistair Reed considers this Tesanj area behind others in terms of reaching a working federation. Captain Dougie McGuire, Liason Officer for the RHF, says that he spends most of his time mediating between local rival organisations, one Croat and one Bosniak, to find compromises. The RHF are currently staying in a former abattoir that has neither running water nor electricity. They have made some improvements. They now have kerosene heaters as well as a wood stove. Despite these imperfect conditions, the Royal Highland Fusiliers continue to do their best to support the people of this area.
