Summary: 50th Division units head inland from 'Gold' Beach to cut the Bayeux-Caen highway at St Léger.
Description: I. The 5th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment heads inland from 'King Red' Beach at La Rivière (4/7th Dragoon Guards and 81st Assault Squadron Royal Engineers armour on and just behind the beach), passing grass set alight by mortar fire, an anti-tank ditch bridged by a Churchill fascine-carrier and a declared minefield at Mont Fleury strongpoint, the shelled village of Mont Fleury (?) and a 50th Division artillery halftrack and several civilians in Ver-sur-Mer. The battalion advances on Crépon; Wehrmacht troops wave a white flag in order to surrender. Villagers watch British troops file through Crépon. Supported by the 4/7th Dragoon Guards, the troops head for Villers-le-Sec, taking several prisoners and encountering a destroyed 352nd Infantry Division (?) 'Sturmgeschütz' en route, fraternise with civilians in the village and encounter opposition in St Gabriel. A night-time fire blazes near Brécy. (?)
II. The battalion heads for Rucqueville. Infantry and vehicles file through the village; Allied (?) fighters fly low overhead. Smoke rises from Martragny; the battalion takes up defensive positions outside St Léger. Mitchell medium bombers fly into action. A rifleman takes up position in a looted farmhouse bedroom.
