Summary: A study conducted at RNAS Culdrose (HMS Seahawk), Cornwall, of the effectiveness of fluoride powder to douse magnesium based fires.
Description: Comparison of standard fire fighting powder with fluoride powder. Drums of aviation fuel poured onto hardstanding surrounding a retired Sea Hawk aircraft. Five reels of magnesium are placed on and around the aircraft, then the fuel is ignited. The wind sends the fire to the rear of the aircraft. Standard fire powder does not affect the magnesium fire but the fluoride powder very quickly quenches the fire. For the second test a single reel of magnesium is placed in a tray, covered with aviation fuel and ignited. Again the effectiveness of the fluoride powder in dousing the fire is demonstrated. For the third test the Sea Hawk is used again but placed in a different position due to the wind. For the final test five magnesium based aircraft wheels are set on fire and successfully doused using the fluoride powder.
