Summary: Rushes from Operation Grapple, a series of British atomic tests conducted on Malden Island in 1957.
Description: Reel one: Round one (Short Granite). Detonation and subsequent mushroom cloud as viewed from Shackleton reconnaissance aircraft.
Reel two: Round two (Orange Herald). The developing mushroom cloud as viewed from Shackleton reconnaissance aircraft. Also includes various aerial shots of Christmas Island.
Reel three: Round three (Purple Granite). The weapon (a Blue Danube bomb case) is manoeuvred into the bomb bay of Valiant XD823. Weapon is then hoisted into position and the closure of the bomb doors tested. Some ancillary parts are tested on the ground and then inserted into the weapon.
Reel four: Round three. Detonation and subsequent mushroom cloud as viewed from Shackleton reconnaissance aircraft. Includes build up of fireball doughnut shape, followed by temperature inversion.
Reel five: Round three. Detonation and subsequent mushroom cloud as viewed from observer ship HMS Narvik.
