IWM Lecture Day: War in Film

Join us at IWM London for a day of discussion on how war has been represented in film, from the First World War to the present day.

15 March 2026. We have a pair of tickets to give away.

This event explores the evolving relationship between cinema and conflict, and how filmmakers have influenced the way war is remembered and interpreted. We’ll examine how film has been used to document conflict and how dramatised portrayals, from propaganda and heroic narratives to more realistic depictions, have shaped public understanding and memory of war.

Guest speakers include historian and author Joshua Levine, who served as a historical advisor for Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk and Steve McQueen's Blitz, and Andy Robertshaw, a First World War historian who advised on Steven Spielberg's War Horse, Sam Mendes' 1917, and Peter Jackson's documentary They Shall Not Grow Old.
