Licensing projects 2024

Footage, audio and images licensed from the IWM collections has appeared in many notable projects this year. Here are a few highlights:

Television / Streaming

Churchill at War. Produced by Imagine Documentaries. Netflix

Using colourised archival footage, 'Churchill at War' looks at the man behind the legend.  As well as providing a Curator Consultancy service to ensure historical accuracy, HD film clips and images were licensed for the four-part documentary premiering on Netflix on 4 December 2024. 

D-Day: The Unheard Tapes. Produced by BBC/Wall to Wall Media Ltd in partnership with The Open University and IWM. Watch on BBC iPlayer. 

Coinciding with the 80th anniversary of D-Day in 2024, the three-part documentary relives one of the most extraordinary days in the history of modern warfare with actors lip-syncing the audio recordings of those who were there on 6 June 1944. 

Interviews with the last surviving veterans were also licensed for Radio 4's D-Day: The Last Voices. Listen on BBC Sounds.

As well as providing a curator consultancy service, IWM licensed images as set dressing to bring to life the locations seen in the series.

McQueen's evacuee character was inspired by an IWM photograph. Second World War era posters were licensed as set dressing.
