Summary: Demonstration in the Alamein area of the procedure before a long range gun can be fired.
Description: The Counter Battery officer examines air photographs and marks up suspected enemy gun batteries. The map references are given out to forward observation posts by telephone. The men at the observation posts locate the enemy batteries using binoculars and report the locations back to the underground plotting room. The men in the plotting room collect the bearings and work out the exact grid reference of the enemy guns. Positions are marked on a large scale map. This information is passed back to the Counter Battery officer who decides the best gun site to engage the enemy. The 426 Battery, Royal Horse Artillery is selected. The bearing and elevation of the gun is calculated and the gun is fired. (Dope sheet notes that the observation work is carried out by "4th Durham Survey Unit RA".)
