28 November. General Montgomery drives himself around Benghazi in a staff car. He leaves Navy House and visits the cathedral, watched by a few soldiers. He chats to one of the priests. He eats a lunch of bully beef and cold potatoes in his car, in a quiet street overlooking the harbour. He poses for a photograph taken by a Royal Army Service Corps sergeant and stops to talk to Lieutenant General Leese, 30 Corps Commander. Montgomery gets into his car and leaves.
27 November. «HMSAS Imhoff» , a South African minesweeper approaching Benghazi harbour after leaving Tobruk. The mine detecting hammer is lowered fifteen miles outside the entrance to the harbour. The captain, Lieutenant Webb, sets his course for the harbour entrance. Close up of the hammer. The captain and his Number One look out for floating mines. Benghazi from five miles out, a German ship burning in the harbour. The «Imhoff» passes the harbour wall. The hammer is brought up. A seaman takes a sounding. Wrecks in the harbour. A burning oil tanker. Damage to the tow of the ship is visible. A seaman operates a winch.
