Description: The importance of photography in the Royal Air Force is demonstrated by showing examples of its uses, including aeriel surveillance photography (loading and unloading camera pods under wings, developing and processing the exposed 125mm film, analysis by trained photographic interpreters). Photographers with 35mm SLR cameras on board a Nimrod take shots of a suspicious vessel; the (colour) shots are then developed. Other, less obvious, RAF uses for photography are also shown, including keeping a pictorial record of the correct loading of unconventional items onto a Hercules aircraft, and the use of PMT (photo-mechanical transfer) cameras for lithography. Training for these skills in the RAF takes place at the Joint School of Photography, based at RAF Cosford - aspects of the courses are shown. "Quality photography" is needed for public relations purposes (Royal Visit by HRH Princess Anne) and because "the RAF needs to keep a local as well as a national record of the activities of its people".
