- Description: I. 'ITALY.' United States (US) Fifth Army M4A1 Sherman tanks and soft-skinned vehicles drive through the newly liberated streets of Rome. South African 6th Armoured Division (13 Corps) Universal carriers drive through the streets of Orvieto in Umbria. South African infantry chat to Italian civilians outside a bar in Orvieto. Very young German Army prisoners are displayed before the cameras. South African artillery tractors tow limbers and 25-pounder howitzers through the hamlet of Allerona (Umbria). South African Ordnance 25-pounder howitzers fire a barrage at high elevation during fighting to overcome the German rear guard actions in the hills around Allerona. II. 'INVASION FRONT.' Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) de Havilland Mosquito FB VI aircraft of 464 Squadron (Second Tactical Air Force) take off on a mission. A pair of Royal Air Force (RAF) Douglas Boston III aircraft (107 Squadron) bank low over the airfield perimeter as they raise their undercarriage following take off. A RAAF Avro Lancaster bomber of 463 Squadron runs up its engines, its front defensive turret traverse is tested prior to a sortie. Stock shot footage shows RAF Mosquito aircraft overflying the sea at low-level. A North American B-25 Mitchell bomber aircraft drops a stick of bombs on a undisclosed target. Operational footage shows bombs impacting on railway marshalling yards. Brief operational footage shows an incendiary marker bomb exploding over the Gnome-Rhone factory at Limoges during an attack by 617 Squadron Lancasters on the night of February 8 1944. British infantry armed with Lee-Enfield No.IV .303-inch rifles and Bren .303-inch light machine guns move past a graveyard in the environs of Tilly-sur-Seulles in Calvados (France). RAF Short Stirling Mk V transport aircraft drop supplies and paratroopers in the area of Caen. British paratroopers wearing Denison jackets drive past the camera position in a Jeep that towing a trailer. United States (US) VII Corps infantry fire M1 Garand .30-inch self-loading rifles and M1 .30-inch carbines at the outskirts of Cherbourg (Manche). US infantry run along a tree-lined road carrying M1 carbines and ammunition boxes. German soldiers emerge from a building having surrendered to US infantry carrying M1 carbines and M3 .45-inch sub-machine guns. A US Willys Jeep is driven to a waiting landing craft carrying four wounded soldiers lying on stretchers. The wounded are loaded onto the LCT by US corpsmen. Generalleutnant Karl W von Schlieben and men of Infanterie Division 709 surrender to members of the US 79th Infantry Division following the capture of Cherbourg. A US 79th Division infantryman carrying a captured Walther 9mm automatic pistol searches waiting German prisoners as other US soldiers look on.
