- Description: A French vet and two British vets check a bandaged horse in the open on the 'hospital' (obviously a farm). All the vets, including two women, wear operating gowns from time to time. A British vet uses a syringe to take fluid from a horse's head wound before rebandaging it. The Canadians practise entrenching on the plain, using the turf to hide the conspicuous white chalk thrown up by their digging. They then rush forward 'over the top' to man the trench. (Men of the First Canadian Contingent, who left for France in February 1915.) One of the guns, described as a "6-inch gun" is shown in detail as it is loaded and fired. There is snow on the ground. The gun misses fire on the first occasion. Several firings are shown. The wreckage of a house is shown, Mr Ellis' house in Peter's Plain, Yarmouth. The caption states that the falling masonry killed two passers-by. The house has had one wall completely stripped away by the blast. The ruined furniture is lined up for removal. Grand Duke Nicholas, the Russian Commander-in-Chief, talks with his staff in a forest, then beside his nearby headquarters train. He is joined by Tsar Nicholas. A final posed group of the Tsar and Grand Duke with the General Staff members. The men are in full uniform but some are without rifles. They are on a route march in the driving snow, with a number of civilians walking alongside out of curiosity. They come out of some trees and onto Epsom racecourse, where, with more civilians watching, they form up for parade.
