Summary: 2nd Battalion, Suffolk Regiment, in the rear areas of the Western Front, autumn 1917.
Description: A posed group of the battalion officers. Men sitting and drinking outside a kiosk marked as the "Divisional Canteen". The camp barber at work outside his tent. The men stand outside their own tents cleaning their equipment and weapons, then wash themselves at a semi-permanent arrangement of basins and standpipes. Some of the men play cards. Food containers arrive and the men are served with a form of meatloaf. They rest beside their tents. A company in helmets and field equipment, led by its band, marches over "territory captured from the Germans". A single file of men crosses an overgrown German trench, and the men sit round as an officer, at the bottom of the trench, lectures them on German emplacements. Some of the men scramble over the wreck of a German reinforced concrete lookout tower. Two of the soldiers inspect two temporary wooden crosses marking German graves. A side view of the men defending a trench among trees in a training exercise.
