Summary: G E Pugh was a member of The Army Physical Training Corps (APTC) and the Paracchute Regiment, and talks about his service in The Second World War (including Arnhem) and experiences in Rhodesia at the time of UDI.
Description: Mr Pugh joined the APTC in 1935 and in 1942 trained for airborne duties when a WOII. In the first tape (fifty-five minutes) he describes the experience of parachute jumping and, with very clear recollection, talks about his part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem). As senior APT Instructor to 44 Brigade, he volunteered to go with General Sir John (then Brigadier) Hackett as his bodyguard. He talks about life in the first few days of the Arnhem Operation and how he was wounded and taken prisoner. This interview also contains some detailed recollections of the equipment and clothing used by parachute troops.
