Summary: Training demonstration, given by an instructor and soldiers, at the mock urban CQBR range "Newtown", at Ballykinler.
Description: (Tape 1) First demonstration. The first section demonstrates exit drills from army/police bases: the "pairs" formation (soldiers leaving in twos) and the "starburst" formation (soldiers leaving in a well-spaced group). Second sequence demonstrates procedures when a five-man patrol comes under fire from a sniper. Third sequence discusses procedures for checking a location where hostages may be held. Final sequence mirrors the first, as soldiers re-enter RUC station by both "pairs" and "starburst" methods.
(Tape 2) Second demonstration. This session demonstrates the procedures to be undertaken when an IED (improvised explosive device) is encountered (in this case, a possible bomb in a hijacked van), including the clearance operation, setting up a cordon and control point and the arrival of the ATO (Army Technical Officer) who will defuse it. The training is informal and humorous, with the rôle of the ATO being played "for laughs" (he is dressed comically, his van is filled with empty beer cans, he steals a television and generally acts like an idiot). He uses a garden wheelbarrow as a bomb disposal aid (a humorous reference to the bomb disposal robot nicknamed the wheelbarrow). The bomb eventually goes off and the ATO emerges with his uniform in tatters.
