Summary: Monochrome, silent CCTV footage (from several different cameras) showing troops undergoing training in keeping public order at "Beeston Village" urban training area. The camera number appears in the top left-hand corner of the screen. Note that some of the cameras are black and white, and some colour.
Description: I. Political march by hooded "Loyalists" flying the English flag pass down a street accompanied by police/troops in and snatch Land Rovers (very wet conditions). They encounter an army roadblock comprised of several snatch Land Rovers and a Saxon armoured vehicle. Reverse angle view (colour) from camera behind the line. More general views. The marchers re-route after minor scuffles at the barricade. Some elements of the crowd begin throwing stones and petrol bombs. Land Rovers move to let soldiers take cover and, after regrouping, the soldiers emerge into the crowd again. A small number of rioters are tackled behind the barricade. Reinforcements in white police vans arrive. The situation escalates and the crowd are rushed by riot police and are driven back before regrouping; eventually the police regain order and the crowds (and vehicles) disperse. Shots of deserted "streets", and of the riot police and vehicles gathering in parking area at the back of the range. Soldiers line up in riot gear and deploy onto the range. Further disorder: police and soldiers advance on a crowd of rioters (taken from camera "behind the lines"). Soldiers deploy and push the rioters back down the streets: stones and petrol bombs are thrown. Snatch Land Rovers, Saxons and police vans are deployed, and soldiers advance on foot before being pushed back (here, the "riot" stops and starts, and the "rioters" chat with police during one of the breaks in the exercise). Vehicles disperse.
II. Night sequence: "rioters" gather on street and are pushed back by troops and snatch Land Rovers. Petrol bombs are thrown. One street is blocked by a makeshift barricade of smashed cars. Riot continues for some time until the rioters are contained; Saxon drives up to assist, and smashes through the barricade. Unrest continues, with rioters squaring off against the troops and police. Street is sealed off by line of Land Rovers and a stand-off ensues.
