Summary: A film about the English system of elementary education which, the opening titles allege, would not be tolerated under a Nazi regime.
Description:The film follows Mrs James, the headmistress of Ashley Green School, Bucks, through a 'typical' working day, showing her not only teaching (3 classes at once) but also fulfilling a social work function among the village's 30 evacuees. The children are said to love school, where they learn arithmetic, English, geography, music and biology. They are also shown in the school garden, playing games, and on an outing to gather wood-chips from forestry work. They are encouraged to help each other; and various aspects of "war effort" work are shown - knitting, vegetable gardening, collecting scrap, learning to work a stirrup pump. The commentary stresses the need to bring children through the war unscathed in mind as well as body.
