- Summary: "ALL INDIA CELEBRATIONS ON VICTORY DAY" I. "DELHI". At the Church of the Redemption India's Viceroy attends a Thanksgiving Service. Connaught Place sees the largest military parade ever held in the capital with more than five thousand servicemen and women taking part. II. "LAHORE". Forty six Chinese aircraft take part in an air display as a mile-long procession marches down the Lahore Mall. III. "CALCUTTA". Parades are held in a city that was once near the front line, where peace means a return to normality after years of bombs and blackouts. IV. "MADRAS". Special ceremonial service with crowds of fifty thousand people out to cheer the soldiers. V. "SHILLONG". Allied soldiers march past the Governor. VI. "NAGPUR". Victory Parade held. VII. "LUCKNOW". Victory parade through triumphal arches and Victory gates. VIII. "KARACHI". Procession of jeeps led the Victory march through the city.
- Description: I. DELHI Sir John Colville arrives by car at Broadcasting House, New Delhi. He is welcomed by the Member for Information and Broadcasting, Sir Sultan Ahmed. Colville makes a broadcast in front of a microphone: ‘Today will be a memorable day in history. The Nazi menace which swept like a flood over Europe and Africa, has been finally overcome.’ India’s Viceroy and high ranking officials attend a thanksgiving service at the Church of Redemption. Views show the exterior of the building and of ministers and the congregation exiting the Church. The congregation is mostly British, although it includes Sir Azizul Huque and Sir J P Srivastava, members of the Viceroy’s Executive Council. More than 5000 servicemen and women take part in a victory parade at Connaught Place. Crowds watch the parade, which is led by mechanised columns. Views of armoured cars, mobile workshops and amphibious vehicles, followed by horse drawn units of the Royal Indian Army Service Corps. Views of the crowds include people watching from a building. Bands of Indian Army and British Army Regiments lead a guard of honour which is made up of cadets from the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun. Views of US troops taking part in the celebration. Colonel Irving Wu Dooh, who served as the Military Attaché in India, watches a detachment of Chinese Infantry break into ceremonial step as it reaches the saluting base. Views of a Sikh regiment. Night time scenes show Delhi’s public buildings, which are flood lit. II. LAHORE 46 Chinese aircraft take part in an air display as a mile-long procession marches down the Lahore Mall. Sir Bertrand Glancy, Governor of Punjab, arrives at Lahore to attend the victory celebrations and is attended to by the Premier of Punjab, Sir Malik Khizar Hayat Khan Tiwana. Views of aircraft overhead flown by Chinese pilots. Views looking down from a rooftop of spectators cheering the procession as it marches down the Lahore Mall. Views of the procession, including the Camel Corps, as they pass the saluting base. Views of aircraft overhead flying in a ‘V’ formation. III. CALCUTTA Scenes at the victory parade in Calcutta. Views of the exterior of a Church. Ministers stand on a platform with a Union Jack draped across the front. Views of the congregation gathered outside for the thanksgiving service. Scenes at the parade include the Indian Red Cross driving by in vehicles. Richard Gardiner Casey, the Governor of Bengal, takes the salute as 2000 servicemen and women march past. Scenes show food and clothing being distributed to the poor at centres in the city. The Governor and Mrs Casey help with the distribution. Views of Indian women and children at the centres. IV. MADRAS Scenes show a ceremonial service at Madras. Views of the exterior of the church. The congregation sit under an awning. Views of public buildings with flags fluttering in the breeze. The exterior of one building displays a sign which says ‘Germany Out! Now for Japan!’ 24 units are taking part in the celebrations. Views of crowds under the Munroe statue where the Governor takes the salute. Views of a women’s unit marching past. Scenes show spectators applauding behind the Governor. A unit on horseback ride past. V. SHILLONG Scenes in Shillong, Assam. Views of newspapers announcing the Allied Victory with banner headlines. Scenes show a van with loudspeakers broadcasting the news in the street, surrounded by crowds of Indian people. Allied soldiers march past the Governor. VI. NAGPUR Mr Bourne, Governor of the Central Provinces, arrives to attend the victory parade. He inspects an Indian unit. Another Indian Army unit marches past the saluting base. Brief view of an Indian regimental band playing. View of crowds of English and Indian people watching the parade. 25-pounder guns fire a ceremonial salute. VII. LUCKNOW Scenes at the victory parade in Lucknow. An Indian Army regiment marches past the saluting base. Major General Hammond takes the salute on the polo ground. Views of the procession, including a unit mounted on horseback, passing crowds of spectators. Dignitaries on elephants pass by. Another unit passes on horseback. VIII. KARACHI Views of the exteriors of buildings. A regimental band marches past. A two mile long Victory procession marches through the city, led by jeeps. Scenes show Sir Hugh Dow, Governor of Sind, taking the salute. Views of an Indian Army unit on horseback. Views of spectators. Several decorated floats drive by, including one with ‘Dock Emergency Hospital’ written on the side and a mock U-45 with ‘Unconditional Surrender’ written on the side. Horse-drawn carriages pass by.
