  • Description: I. 26 September. Lynx helicopters from the Fleet Air Arm's 847 Naval Air Squadron fly in to Camp Bastion. Apache, Chinook and Sea King helicopters are also seen. (15 minutes) II. 28 September. Members of W Company of 45 Commando Royal Marines undertake live firing exercises at Bastion ranges: this takes the form of a section attack. Preparation includes a Barma search (for hidden mines), weapons loading and safety brief. The attack is against a series of "enemy compounds" represented by a series of Hesco bastions. A mouse-hole charge is used to break down a compound "door". Fire support group (FSG) provides covering fire. Weapons used include SA80, Minimi and GPMG (general purpose machine gun); also use of UGL (underslung grenade launcher). Colour Sergeant "Ginger" Anderson describes the background to the drills. Live firing from moving WMIK Land Rovers and Jackal armoured vehicles.
