Summary: Three sets of trials of a new ramp door on Landing Craft Mechanised (Mark 9); the new ramp is a modified, extended version approved by the US Department of Naval Construction (DNC). Location is Greysands beach on the Taw estuary, Devon. The trials took place in June, July and October 1969.
Description: (Reel 1) A Centurion tank and an armoured recovery vehicle (ARV) are seen embarking and disembarking from landing craft L710. The vehicles are also seen wading. (June 1969)
(Reel 2) LCM(9) L710, with the modified ramp lowered onto pebbled beach, waits as a beach armoured recovery vehicle (BARV) drives on board. The BARV then drives off onto the shingle beach and into the water. L710 raises its ramp door, which can be seen it its closed position. DUKW in the water. General views of the L710. (July 1969)
(Reel 3) LCM(9) L708 approaches the shore, its new ramp door lowering. A beach armoured recovery vehicle (BARV) disembarks onto the pebbled beach and the LCM sets sail again. L709 comes towards shore. Upon landing, it disembarks a Chieftain tannk which reverses back on again to test the stability of the ramp. a BARV drives on board. The ramp door rises. Further brief trial sequences with both L709 and L708. (October 1969)
