Summary: Scientific Advisor (SCIAD) operation: UBIED (underbelly improvised explosive device) disruption trials in the Iraqi desert.
Description: I. Trial Serial 0. Marker flag is set up and cylindrical explosive charge is dug in, with detonator wire trailing outward. Long shot of controlled Serial 0 explosion.
II. Trail Serial 1 - controlled explosion trial. Charge is set off in the desert (long shot from same camera position and belches smoke as it creates a heat signature for a Javelin missile. Extended shot of the distant smouldering charge: eventually a Javelin missile homes in on it and explodes in a massive cloud of dust.
III. Trial Serial 2. Medium shot of marker; after an extended period, several explosions are set off just to the right of the camera frame; these are shots from a Warrior armoured vehicle's main gun, but the vehicle is off-camera and the dust cloud is all that can be seen. Dust clears to reveal disturbed ground.
IV. Trial Serial 3. HESH (High Explosive Squash Head) round is tested (fired by offscreen Challenger 2 tank; target is visible in far distance on range). Round is fired and smoke fills the air. Second round is fired and hits a target to the left of the screen, and a third to the right. Camera focuses on another target (a ruined vehicle) for several minutes but no shot is seen to be fired.
V. Trial Serial 6. Further extended shots of the range (no activity), before gunfire (from an offscreen Apache helicopter) and puffs of smoke as the distant targets are hit. Several minutes later, a second charge is fired.
VI. Trial Serial 5 [sic]. Sapper lays a cratering charge, placing the charge near sandbags. Extended shot of the range. Due to the high winds, the remote camera pans slowly to the right, resulting in the charge being offscreen at the time of detonation.
