Summary: An edition of the British official newsreel "World Pictorial News", produced by the Ministry of Information, Middle East.
Description: I. 'MAKING CARPETS.' A woman designer puts the finishing touches to her pen and ink design sketch for a carpet pattern. Interior footage taken at a carpet factory in Wilton (Wiltshire) shows women factory workers using hand-looms to weave carpets in the traditional manner. Wool is placed in a dyeing vat. Newly recruited ex-Servicemen are given instruction in machine weaving by a factory foreman. Power-looms are shown producing strip carpets which are automatically folded by the machine at the end of the manufacturing process.
II. 'SWEET CORN- FROM COB TO CAN.' Female land workers hand pick corn cobs at a farm in New South Wales. The freshly picked cobs are thrown onto the back of a passing soft-skinned vehicle which transports them to a processing plant. Interior footage shows female factory workers hand sorting the cobs which move past them on a conveyor belt. Corn niblets are removed from the cobs by an imported United States (US) machine made by the Food Machine Corporation. The canning process is shown. Completed cans of corn are stacked in a storage area to await labelling.
III. 'SPORTS ITEMS.' Sweden's Hammarby ice hockey team plays an English side at the Empire Pool in Wembley, Middlesex. Highlights of the match follow with added entertainment from a Czech comedy skater (Wondrous) dressed as Popeye. Highlights of the well-attended National Hunt steeplechase at Cheltenham conclude this item.
