  • Summary: Members of 34 Squadron the RAF Regiment on patrol on the outskirts of Basra and involved in route clearance work. Shot largely with a helmetcam.
  • Description: I. Members of the Combat Camera Team (CCT) (Captain Lorna Ward, Corporal Andy Holmes) inside a Mastiff vehicle. Helmetcam scenes: cameraman here is Captain Ward. Informal scenes during the journey (low light). II. Patrol in low light along roadside and under flyover at night. Vehicles drive past. III. Interior of Mastiff at dawn. Cut to dawn shots of patrol along roadside and across open ground. The patrol approaches a village. Soldiers and CCT make their way through the village and along semi-derelict railway line (this is the same village as seen on previous tapes). Suspect truck is passed. Patrol leader points out two local schools where the children have been stoning army vehicles (no children are around this early in the morning). Views of Mastiff by roadside. Patrol continues towards road junction which is being secured before convoys pass through; inspections under flyover. Corporal Holmes is seen filming. Snap vehicle checkpoint is set up, and vehicle checks are made. IV. Dawn: view through rear doors of Mastiff to show convoy on road. Foot patrol in village (almost deserted) village. Camera is placed on ground, focusing on car park where a group of Iraqi men greet each other. Patrol then continues (some shaky camerawork) through the streets of the village and across derelict, rubbish-strewn railway tracks. Vehicle with tinted windows (as seen in tape 1) is closely inspected. Further shots of the railway line (stretch of track in good order). Burnt-out wreck of a car is passed. The patrol continues (more shaky shots). Various shots of the CCT at work filming Mastiffs on the move, before the group return and climb on board the Mastiff. Convoy on road. Views at second location at desert road. British vehicles are joined by an Iraqi Police vehicle with rear-mounted gun position. Further interior scenes in Mastiff - informal banter between the team. V. Various brief scenes at the COB, including lunch.
