Summary: Acting on intelligence, members of 1st Battalion the Cheshire Regiment (1 CHESHIRE) conduct a daytime search in Basra City.
Description: Street patrol by 1 CHESHIRE in Basra; several Snatch Land Rovers are parked at the side of the road as a group of soldiers gather. Local people stand nearby (including some very friendly young girls). Helicopter flies overhead: children cheer. Soldiers search with shovels on rubble-strewn roadside (searches for possible hidden guns). Local woman shopkeeper and a group of children watch. Grounds of a house are searched thoroughly; metal detector is used. Soldiers talk to local man in English. Ladder is placed against the wall of a house and soldiers climb up on the roof; others go into the shop and conduct a search (the interior is nearly derelict: rough shelves with basic goods, and poor interior lighting - torches are used). In the shop, an AK47 or derivative is discovered wrapped in plastic, along with a small number of shells; a personal weapon, so no action is taken. Dusk begins to fall towards the end of the tape
