Summary: Scenes from the fifth phase of Operation Talisman, one of a series of detention and search operations carried out by Task Force Maysan (targeted operations against insurgents). Shown is a search and arrest operation involving the British Army (Staffordshire Battle Group) and the Tactical Support Unit of the Iraqi Police Service. Shot at night with an image intensifier.
Description: Warrior armoured vehicles on the move and stationary at Camp Abu Naji; soldiers sit in turret, others wait nearby. Soldier checks his equipment at the roadside. Lights flash on moving Warrior. General views of vehicles, including a Saxon. Soldiers silhouetted in light. Open rear door of Warrior shows another soldier preparing. Interior views during journey into Al Amarah. Scenes in the town: foot patrol along street. Members of the TSU gather with British troops outside target house, their faces hidden behind ski masks. (Voice of Muezzin can be heard.) Gate of house opens, and other members of the TSU exit. Inside the house: men are held under guard, their hands behind their backs (but not bound), as a search of the house and grounds is undertaken. Outside on the street, Warriors move up and a local man rides past on a cart drawn by a donkey. Back inside, the search continues; a Royal Engineer stands by with an explosives/weapons dog. Shaky shots inside the house as boxes and sacks are searched; suspect items are bagged and logged. There is a large portrait of Moqtadr al-Sadr on the wall. The search continues in the courtyard. Outside, soldiers talk with a local man.
Daylight scenes in full colour at Camp Abu Naji: interview with Captain Mike Niblett, CO of C Company. He discusses the operation shown above, noting that the two "bravos" (targeted suspects) were not present at the house, but the operation was still a success because it displayed the presence of the Multinational Forces and also the presence of the Iraqi forces in the form of the TSU. The operation also served a useful purpose as a mentoring exercise for the TSU.
