- Description: SHOTSHEET (copied, without amendment, from accompanying Defence Media Operations Centre computer disc): START 00:30:00 Interview with Captain Fernando Querol.* 00:55:00 What is the specific role of your ship within the NATO fleet? "We provide Air support for operations ashore and against surface ships and attacking aircraft. We also contribute to reconnaissance both maritime and air pictures. We also help with logistical support with our Helicopters for transport and search and rescue." 02:15:00 Have you been conducting reconnaissance of the Oakland navy? "This is the first reconnaissance flights we have run today... We have an advanced force that has had contact with the Oakland Navy and this is just a show of force to show we have resolution and we are capable of controlling the area." 04:40:00 If the NATO fleet is attacked how will that affect you? "I do not expect them to attack us but we are prepared they are just exercising and we do not perceive them as a threat." 06:30:00 What role will your ship play in the NEO? "We can provide air support from Transport to reconnaissance and protection." Cut short by coughing fit by Loise. 08:20:00 2nd take "We provide support using Helicopters as a transport facility and Harriers for close air support." 09:28:00 What role do the harriers play and how does dropping bombs fit into an evacuation operation? "We have the capability to bomb people attacking our units during the evacuation operation and this should act as a good deterrent alone. We are not here to drop bombs we are here to provide support." 11:32:00 What developments would cause you to drop bombs during the NEO? "I don't expect the NEO to develop into a bombing mission. We are under strict rules of engagement... we are a controlled force under strict rules of engagement." 13:25:00 Surely matching a attack on the ground with a bomb from a harrier is not proportional? "That depends on the level of aggression made by the other groups... You may think that a soldier is not at the same level as a terrorist but they too have dangerous weapons... we never use more force than needed to counter the attack." 15:50:00 "We are not expecting collateral damage... that could spoil the entire mission this is why the ROE are so strict." 17:00:00 "I think/hope that just the presence of our forces will discourage attacks." 18:16:00 Flight deck operations various shots of Harriers, Sea King and crew at work on the Flight deck and movements control. 25:16:00 Captain Querol and Loise Hayes chatting in flight deck control. 27:53:00 CO chatting to Flight deck officers. 29:00:00 More harriers landing on PDA's Flight deck. 32:40:00 Harrier pilot exiting air craft after flying sortie. 35:44:00 Interview with Lt Saiz 9SQDn Spanish Navy Harrier pilot. 36:51:00 How much can you tell me about the reconnaissance mission you have just returned from? "It was a pretty straight forward flight with no surprises we flew over the embargo area and had no contacts of interest." 37:23:00 What exactly were you looking for? "We are here to help the ships and air command keep a clear picture of what is happening within the area." 38:06:00 What would the threat be and how would you react? "We were trying to identify any terrorist ship or illegal shipping carrying WMDs." 38:38:00 What role will the Harriers play in the NEO? "We will try to support the operation as a deterrent force in case the NEO forces come under attack." 40:45:00 As a Human being how will you feel if called to drop a bomb on a civilian area? "Nowadays we have pin point weapons which should prevent any civilian casualties... If there is a risk of civilian casualties the mission would not be authorised." 40:40:00 How would you feel personally about dropping bombs? "With the systems I have I'm pretty sure I'm never going to drop a bomb in an unauthorised place I would never do that. I feel comfortable with it as I have complete confidence in my systems and so I will never be in that position." 41:50:00 What message would you send to people thinking of interfering with the NEO? "Basically like all terrorists that is not the way to do things and we are stronger and we can hit you if we need to so you had better stay quite." 42:15:00 G.Vs of hangar deck and sea king maintainers at work. 48:00:00 Tape ends.
