Summary: Members of the Iraqi Army's 10 Division, newly relocated in the Shatt Al-Arab Hotel (which has now been vacated by British forces), undergo basic training.
Description: I. General views at the Hotel: Iraqi Army officers set upon a table and inspect large map of Basra. Sentries keep guard at main gate. Armoured vehicles (one marked "COmAnDOS.10.DV") are parked inside. Soldiers keep watch, their guns aimed, in a sangar. Exterior of barracks/accommodation area. Iraqi troops talk with a British soldier (1st Battalion the Staffordshire Regiment). The map seen earlier is mounted on the wall by Iraqi officers with duct tape. Iraqi Army pick up truck with rear-mounted gun drives past camera.
II. Training on parade square: troops assemble and are briefed. They carry out patrol drills, moving through the area with their guns raised; a second group of soldiers sits and watches. Vehicle checkpoint drills: soldiers stop and search a pick up truck and its occupants. Further patrol drills (under instruction) are carried out; these include fire and manoeuvre drills as soldiers run forward and take aim. Group of sitting soldiers applause. Sun sets behind barbed wire. At the end, soldiers march off while singing a song. Sequence ends with some shaky shots of vehicle park and an interview with Major Yaas, a Company Commander in the Iraqi Army's 10 Division about the move into the hotel and the advantages that this will bring.
