Summary: Two scenes showing aspects of drug enforcement in Afghanistan, 2007.
Description: I. Views of the police narcotics courtroom (empty) including the dock, the judges' table and the jury area. Bagged examples of drugs are displayed on a table. The counter-narcotics holding area is opened by court official: down a flight of steps are the holding cells themselves, which are used for storing seized drugs. Close-ups of plastic sacks full of heroin pellets, and also capsules which can be swallowed to hide the drug internally. Contents of a cell marked "Opium". Officials show examples of hiding places for drugs in the bindings of books, in shoes, even in the weave of carpets. Visit to well-equipped laboratory where suspected drugs are tested.
II. General views of military ranges outside Kabul (Camp Morehead?). Demonstration on the range showing the interdiction of vehicles and their occupants by the Afghan National Army's specialist Commando Force 333, who are deployed by a Mil Mi-8MT helicopter (YA-94311, registered to the Afghan Special Narcotics Force). The commandos are backed up on the ground by ANA pick-up trucks. Helicopters land and pick up the soldiers and their captives. Shaky hand held shots (as camera is moved) precede close-up shots of arrests being made and a pick-up truck being searched by commandos; its occupants are arrested and marched across the desert to helicopter pick-up point. Red smoke flares are used as a marker. Helicopter arrives and everybody (including the cameraman) embarks. Shots on board the helicopter. Commandos deploy at second location to interdict another vehicle. Search, arrest and air pick-up takes place as before.
