Summary: Two sequences in Lashkar Gah: members of 26 Engineer Regiment Reconnaissance Troop on patrol and at SNVCPs (snap vehicle checkpoints), and members of C Company the Worcestershire and Sherwood Foresters Regiment on patrol.
Description: I. On a road in Lashkar Gah, 26 Engineer Regiment set up a snap vehicle checkpoint. The road is strewn with gravel as it is currently being renovated; new drainage culverts can be seen on either side. Cars (and their occupants) are searched. Soldier talks with elderly local man through translator; others gather. (Poor sound due to background noise. (Black screen ca 1 minute, with sound only). Tractor is searched at checkpoint - it is pulling an open trailer containing several occupants. Various other vehicles are checked - discussions with local driver about the security situation. Visit to Afghan National Army outpost. Interview with Staff Sergeant Tony Everton 26 Engineer Regiment, discussing the aim of stopping insurgents entering the area, and liaison with local people about engineer tasks in the area.
II. Foot patrol (C Company the Worcestershire and Sherwood Foresters Regiment) outside village, covered by Snatch Land Rovers. Chinook helicopter flies past with underslung load. Group of children gather. Views of new drainage culverts and unfinished concrete structure (watchtower). Soldier gives gift (pencils?) to children, who then approach the camera. Soldier takes photograph of a completed watchtower, and of a narrow roadway under construction by local people; leader of patrol asks questions about the road. Close-ups of culvert. Interview with Lance Corporal Barker about the construction of the road and local water towers, why the Afghans were building them (and why they were taking so long).
