Summary: Construction of an austere runway at Camp Bastion Airfield.
Description: At night, under the glare of floodlights, local Afghan men assist in the construction of a narrow section of runway, shovelling concrete into place as the paving machine progresses slowly along. Automatic arms smooth the concrete after it has been laid. Views across the runway area, showing the preparation under the supervision of the Royal Engineers. Asphalt is shovelled. Preparations of sample bricks. Military and civilial contractors liaise informally.
Concrete hoppers in action, delivering concrete into the back of tipper trucks for transport to the runway. Hopper control room with printers and control display. Raw materials are fed into the hopper for conversion into concrete. Further views of the paving machine and new paved section.
David Markland (Royal Engineers) describes the existing runway, the new project which will increase the uplift capability of the airfield.
In a tent, the sample bricks (shown being made earlier) are cooled in water and then measured on a bench. (Posed shots.) Army photographer takes pictures. The block is subjected to a pressure test (it eventually crumbles).
