Summary: Police Mentoring Team in Lashkar Gah.
Description: British Army Police Mentoring Team (including members of the Royal Irish Regiment and the Royal Military Police) on patrol with members of the Afghan Police on the outskirts of Lashkar Gah, speaking through interpreter. They meet at an Afghan Police Station. British soldier keeps watch on top cover of a Snatch Land Rover. Slow patrol through the streets on foot, backed up by Land Rovers and Police pick-up trucks. Visit to second Afghan Police Station compound which is in a rather shabby state; interview with police officer in Afghani civilian clothes (who complains about the lack of uniforms and ammunition available). Close shots of British soldiers keeping watch; children can be heard playing in the background. Patrol moves on through the streets. Interior views of Snatch Land Rover showing female reporter in her combat uniform and helmet. Third police station; this is in much better order than the previous one. Interviews with uniformed officers. Walls are decorated and also have a picture of President Hamid Karzai on the wall.
Interview with Sergeant Major Johnson, the Patrol Commander, who describes what the patrol set out to achieve (checking the police and that the manning of permanent vehicle checkpoints, and reporting on the needs - kit etc - of the Afghan Police).
Interview with the (unnamed) Officer Commanding the Police Mentoring Team, discussing the allocation of resources, mentoring and training of the Afghan National Police, and the structures of the teams (Military Police do the actual mentoring, with patrol soldiers theer for force protection).
Construction work underway at night by Afghan men (this is the construction of the runway at Camp Bastion, as seen on earlier tape). Runway surface is smoothed by hand. Consistency of cement being laid is checked by Royal Engineers and Afghan personnel using specialist equipment. Fresh cement is laid and smoothed over.
Interview with Dave Markland of the Royal Engineers (who had been interviewed on an earlier tape) on the progress of the runway construction at Bastion, and the runway's eventual capabilities.
