Summary: Construction of an austere runway at Camp Bastion Airfield, and visit by Minister for the Armed Forces Bob Ainsworth MP to Camp Bastion and Camp Shorabak (the neighbouring Afghan National Army camp).
Description: Concrete hoppers in action, delivering concrete into the back of tipper trucks for transport to the new runway. Hopper control room with printers and control display. Raw materials are fed into the hopper for conversion into concrete. Views of the paving machine and new paved section. In a tent,sample bricks are tested. David Markland (Royal Engineers) describes the existing runway, the new project which will increase the uplift capability of the airfield.
Bob Ainsworth arrives and is greeted by senior officers. He meets troops from the Grenadier Guards, listening to their experiences and grievances. Trip to Camp Shorabak: meeting with Afghan National Army senior officers. New building under construction at the camp. Interview with Bob Ainsworth, after which he visits a tented field hospital.
