  • Description: Afghan soldiers advance on foot towards Musa Qala, supported by British troops; they also pause for a break. Sledgehammers are used to open locked units in an abandoned market area in the town. Close-ups of graffiti (which include crude drawings of aircraft and vehicles. Soldiers among ruined concrete buildings. Advance through the derelict area; further units and wrecked cars are checked by an explosives dog. Afghan soldiers stop for a meal break; British officers discuss tactics (including the logistics of feeding the troops, and the moving up of vehicles); conference with Afghan officer. Further views of the market area. A large Afghan flag is raised on a building (the Taliban's former district headquarters ?) to acknowledge the ANA control of the town; Afghan photographer photographs the symbolic moment. Convoy of vehicles passes (pick-up trucks, Humvees). Afghan soldiers cheer. Patrol through Musa Qala; soldier carries rocket propelled grenade and launcher. All is quiet but the Afghan soldiers are watchful. They find a local stall which is open, and stock up on cigarettes. British officer makes a radio check. Advance through narrow streets and beyond. A friendly local man is encountered, who lifts his shirt to show his stomach (presumably to reassure troops that he is not a suicide bomber). Supply convoy in the market area. Afghan sniper loads his gun. Local men hold their arms up to allow themselves to be searched. Houses are searched: one has a room with paintings of air strikes and tanks battle (incongruously alongside paintings of flowers). Proclamations (in Pashto ?) are also on the wall.
