Summary: The Allied entry into Rome, 5 June 1944.
Description: Troops and armour move up, watched by US General Mark Clark (passing 2 couples going to be married); prisoners of war. Rejoicing citizens celebrate German departure/Allied arrival, in various parts of the city; British flags raised on former Gestapo HQ and Barclays Bank; an Italian-US Sergeant from New York embraces a young girl; Clark makes his official entry, is joined by French General Juin; a British officer pays tribute at Unknown Soldier's tomb. San Lorenzo Station, heavily but accurately bombed, illustrates Allied concern to minimise civilian casualties. Parties of Italians fired with anti-Fascism (including group led by Gabriele d'Annunzio's son) storm Fascist HQs and drive collaborators from a radio building; Communist Party offices set up. Huge crowd converges on St Peter's Square and hears Pope Pius XII offer thanks that Rome is spared horrors of war. (Incomplete?) Commentary, Besides praising Allies, attacks Germans and Fascists with some irony (eg on crowd slogans, or comparing 'Marches on Rome') and appeals to Italy's nobler past (Sons of WW1 dead "now fight the same enemy").
