Summary: (Part only of a) French Army newsreel.
Description: Bitter commentary denounces German disregard of international conventions as films shows protected property after attack: buildings clearly marked with Red Cross, a hospital train with smashed windows, peppered sides and stretcher littered around inside, the Hospice Ste Anne, a village cemetery and school classroom, with Vive la France marked on blackboard. French authorities organise orderly evacuation of civilians from certain (unnamed) towns. Piles of luggage lie heaped in a square; soldiers help the frail and elderly, as well as young mothers with their children (marked with identification labels), to board a refugee train which departs, leaving behind an empty town where all the shop doors are barred. Elsewhere, in the open countryside of Northern France, buses slowly transport refugees away from the battle zone (smoke visible on the horizon). Commenatry stresses that authorities are operationg "rigorous controls" on all refugees, over film of a solitary soldier talking to a refugee family. Nurses distribute provisions to the evacuees. Belgian men cross border into France on 18 May, following order "to place themselves at the disposition of the French military command".
