Summary: The visit of Foreign Minister Ciano to Berlin for the signing of the German-Italian Alliance (May 23 1939).
Description: Ciano and his party are seen off from Rome; their train is met in Berlin by units of the Hitlerjugend and the Berlin ("Gruppo Federico Guella") branch of the Fasci all' Estero, and by Ribbentrop. After inspecting the guard of honour, Ciano is driven past enthusiastic crowds to the Adlon. Later, he lays a large wreath at the tomb of the unknown soldier of WW1, and reviews a small parade of German Infantry. The treaty is signed by Ciano and Ribbentrop in the presence of Hitler (with several aides, including Goering) who makes a presentation to Ciano after the ceremony. After a speech by Ciano, signatories appear on the Chancellory balcony, to wild cheers. Film taken at night shows Berlin decked with the flags of the two nations. Next day, the Italians are again cheered as they drive to be seen off by Ribbentrop at the station. Their return to Rome and an appearance by Mussolini marking the alliance are acclaimed.
