Summary: (Free) French newsreel. No commentary.
Description: a) Repatriation of French troops. Two-funnelled passenger ship docks; soldiers disembark and are driven off in trucks past crowds who press forward to greet the freed men.
b) Bordeaux port is paralysed by seven ships scuttled by the Germans in the Garonne. A diver descends watched by two civilian officials and the pumping out of the ships continues.
c) De Gaulle, on a podium flanked by giant Crosses of Lorraine, presents standards to the colonels of the new or reconstituted regiments of the French Army and Air Force squadrons at a ceremony in the Place de la Concorde on 2 April. The head of the Provisional Government, standing before the three service ministers Diethelm, Tillon and Jacquinot, afterwards takes the salute at a huge marchpast by detachments of the Gardes Republicaines, Gardes Nationales, Army, women's services (AFAT), Air Force, Colonial Forces, Foreign Legion and the Deuxième Division Blindée. Impression of French power restored is conveyed by aerial views of the parade stretching past the Opera along the Boulevard des Italiens.
d) De Gaulle awards the Cross of the Liberation to the City of Paris on the afternoon of 2 April. Ceremony takes place in the Place de L'Hotel de Ville where de Gaulle delivers a speech before presenting a plaque to the President of the Municipal Council, Andre le Troquer. Cross of Lorraine is simultaneously unveiled and huge crowds and guests including Koenig and Leclerc join in singing the Marseillaise.
