Summary: First film in a series showing the story of air power and its impact on the world. This episode shows the build-up to and start of the war, up to and including Dunkirk.
Description: The film shows: the Hitler Youth, in 1935, saluting Hitler; meetings at Headquarters Air Defence of Great Britain to discuss the new dangers; the Hurricane and Spitfire in production and service; Radio Direction Finder (RDF), an air early warning system; Neville Chamberlain coming home to London from Munich; invasion of Poland by Germany; British declaration of war (3rd September, 1939) illustrated with shots of refugees, arms and munitions factories, and people building air raid shelters and trying on gas masks; troops sent to France; May 1940, the first bombs on Belgium and Holland; refugees from Luxembourg and the French frontier using anything on wheels to move their family to safety; the evacuation from Dunkirk, showing aircraft of all commands and types fighting against odds of fifty or more to one; soldiers of the British Expeditionary Force being counted as they come ashore in England, and Churchill's speech 'this was their finest hour' over scenes of troops both at home and abroad.
