Summary: Third film in a series showing the story of air power and its impact on the world. This episode illustrates the defence of the Western oceans.
Description: The film shows: Churchills words to Roosevelt that, in August 1940, 'the Germans have the whole French coastline on which to launch attacks upon our trade and food'; the Luftwaffe attacking from bases all along the coast from the Arctic to the Channel a few weeks after the fall of Norway and France; the British moving into Iceland and establishing an airfield and a flying boat base where 'we mount a final guard over the enemy's advance'; 1941, Canada receiving aircraft from the aircraft factories in America to reinforce coastal command in Britain; aircraft patrols; the sinking of the Bismarck, May 1941; extensive footage (with voice-over eyewitness accounts) of the Battle of the Atlantic Gap, which by the summer of 1942 was at its height; and the final idea that 'the end of a patrol is only a beginning, victory is still way down the horizon'.
