Description: Opening scene attempts to evoke the "atmosphere of speed and excitement" conveyed by the sight of a fire engine rushing to answer an emergency call. During the last war, thousands joined up and fought the fires "as heroically as our soldiers fought the enemy. Unsparingly determined to subdue the 'planes that ravaged our homes." The Auxiliary Fire Service is still an active force, continuing this tradition. Montage of AFS activities: firemen rolling out hose, operating portable W/T, and working a pump; despatch rider; rescue team; Thames fire launch AFB.2. "...you will be handling the newest equipment, and working in a fine team. And it can all be done at the cost of only an hour or two a week." Work in the AFS is not just training for its own sake, but a preparation for work alongside the regular fire fighting forces in any emergency.
