Description: The artificer ("tif") keeps the Royal Navy fit by repairing almost anything. Training at HMS Raleigh - 14 weeks continuous assessment - includes PT, lectures, seamanship, weapons, firefighting, survival at sea, assault course. After passing out cadet goes on to chosen sub-branch with its own training establishment - marine, weapons or air. Third phase of training is at sea (all three sub-branches shown on the job). Final phase at Portsmouth, where the three types of tif are seen undergoing highly specialised training. After four years cadets pass out as fully qualified artificer then serve another years probation at sea. The importance of the artificer in the modern navy is stressed again.
