Description: Being a Naval Writer, or "Scribes", offers an office job which is "more exciting than Civvy Street". The Writers' Branch of the RN covers all administration and clerical duties. The Writer's course (13 weeks for men, who do both pay and admin, or 6 weeks for women, who specialise in one of these) is professional and tough. Opportunities in personnel duties, pay, registry, computers etc. WRENs are shore based, can opt for pay duties, general writer or stenographer; chances for travel. Men go to sea after 18 months; "members of a select group" who must be diplomatic, working with men of all ranks, and be good on the telephone. Scribes are also fully trained sailors (torpedo exercise). Possibilities for posting to NATO or to overseas embassies. "One of the most varied and responsible jobs in the Royal Navy".
