Summary: Royal Navy Presentation Team film in which the Type 22 frigate HMS Chatham (F.87) is used to illustrate the roles of various people and departments onboard a typical warship.
Description: The jobs of the Master-At-Arms (the ship's policeman), chaplain, medical assistants and captain, and the roles of the Marine, Weapons and Air engineering and supply branches are all described. HMS Chatham's Sea King helicopter demonstrates its capabilities in the search and rescue, anti-submarine warfare and replenishment roles and Sea Kings are shown flying operationally during the First Gulf War. The Royal Yacht Britannia appears briefly before the tasks undertaken by the Royal Marines are showcased, including their role in the First Gulf War and in post-war humanitarian work in northern Iraq. HMS Chatham then goes to action stations, damage control exercises are shown, particularly firefighting, and chefs and stewards fulfil their combat role as medics. Diving, hydrography, fishery protection, the Hong Kong Squadron, West Indies Guard Ship and Queen Alexandra's Royal Naval Nursing Service also feature. The position taken by HMS Chatham and ships like her when operating as part of a task force is explained, and the film shows how a commander can take control of the air, surface and sub-surface environments around his ships, taking information from airborne early warning aircraft and other intelligence sources to build a picture of the tactical situation. The use of Sea Harrier aircraft, Sea Dart, Harpoon and Sea Wolf missiles and close-in weapon systems such as Goalkeeper to counter threats is then demonstrated. Nuclear submarines, Nimrod, Lynx and Sea King aircraft and anti-submarine frigates such as HMS Chatham counter the sub-surface threat. The logistics of supplying allied forces in the Persian Gulf are explained and the narrator concludes by stating that the main purpose of a warship at sea is to deter aggression.
