Description: The role of the Royal Navy's Armilla Patrol in the Persian Gulf is described, with reference to the Iran-Iraq War, the protection of merchant shipping and mine clearance duties. The film goes on to describe the co-ordinated use of helicopters, surface ships and submarines in the anti-submarine warfare role, and the creation of layered defence against air attack through the use of Sea Harrier aircraft, Sea Dart surface to air missiles and finally short range guns and missiles. The surface threat can be countered by use of Harpoon missiles, Sea Harrier and Buccaneer aircraft and decoy systems. The Royal Marines are shown exercising in northern Norway, the Type 42 destroyer HMS York (D.98) replenishes at sea and mine countermeasures vessels, including the Royal Naval Reserve River Class minesweepers HMS Humber (M.1215) and HMS Itchen (M.1217). The film covers the role of the Royal Marines in responding to terrorist incidents on oil rigs, the work of the Hydrographic Squadron and the role of women, shows the aircraft carrier HMS Invincible (R.05) on a goodwill visit to the Bahamas and other ships on a deployment to the Far East and emphasises the importance of the Navy's people. A 706 Naval Air Squadron Sea King helicopter scrambles to rescue a windsurfer in distress, the first of the Upholder Class submarines, HMS Upholder (S.40) and the first Type 23 frigate, HMS Norfolk (F.230) are launched and the prototype of the EH-101 Merlin helicopter is flown.
