  • Description: I. German Light Athletics Championship. Evidence of vitality and strength of German sport in fourth year of war is provided by competitors in various events at Olympic Stadium in Berlin. Male competitors, almost exclusively serving soldiers, have proved at the front the justice of the late Reichssportführer's (von Tschammer und Osten) claim that the best sportsmen are also the best soldiers, while many of the women, who predominantly are engaged in the total war effort, are from the air war zone in western Germany. Scenes from events include men's long jump, women's shot put, men's javelin, women's discus and high jump, men's pole vault (winner Gustav Sturk), women's 100 metres (Christel Schultz), men's 100 metres (Heinrich Huth), 80 metres hurdles (Maria Dumergala), men's 110 metres hurdles (Hans Seppernich) and men's 4X100 metres relay. Views of spectators include shot of General wearing Knights Cross. II. Foreign volunteers at Waffen-SS training school. At SS-Schule Tölz volunteers from all the Germanic lands follow special courses to become leaders in the Waffen SS. Sport and games, including diving in indoor pool and ball games and physical training outside (Alps in background), form part of varied training of mind and body required for military service. Recruits (all wear SS-Schule Tölz cuffbands; other badges identify Nordland Regiment, Westland Regiment Scharführer, Legion Norwegen Police Company Oberscharführer and Freikorps Danmark Scharführer) eat lunch at tables in dining hall decorated with portrait of Führer on wall, and attend classroom instruction. Individuals spend free time playing chess and reading Estonian newspaper; bookshelf contains works in Estonian (Hitler's Mein Leben) and Flemish (Blood and Myth, German Dictionary). Recruits descend staircase past sculpture of mounted Frederick the Great, line up on parade and march out of barracks. III. Konstantin Hierl receives RAD holders of Knights Cross. Leader of Reichsarbeitsdienst, celebrating fifty years military service, presents copy of his book to RAD men who have been decorated while serving as officers and soldiers in the Army. Generalarbeitsführer Roch then shows men round Hierlshagen Labour Camp in Lower Silesia (Kreis Sprottau). RAD men receive political instruction outdoors. View of twenty-one year old Gefreiter Bittner, who won Knights Cross on Eastern Front. Camera pans over wheatfield, made fertile by years of RAD labour. IV. German paratroops and fighter planes resist Anglo-American forces on Sicily. (Abrupt start) As enemy with superior forces tries to break through German lines, paratrooper runs through vineyard and throws himself prone into firing position with machine gun. Comrades place swastika flag in road as sign for Luftwaffe. Messerschmitt Bf 109 flies overhead, to escort Messerschmitt Bf 110s (air-to-air of three in formation, with nose marking resembling eye) in intended attack on Anglo-American supply columns. Camera-gun film records successful stern attack on Hurricane, which starts to burn on starboard wing tip, then drops undercarriage and finally tips over to port. Near coast group of mostly US prisoners brought in include British paratrooper corporal. V. German bombers prepare to attack Anglo-American transports off Sicily. Bombed-up Messerschmitt Bf 110s on island airfield, Junkers Ju 88 taking off and Bf 110s in flight fly to attack enemy shipping. Air-sea film records small vessel firing in self-defence.
