  • Description: I. Dr Frick assumes office as Reichsprotektor of Bohemia and Moravia. In the courtyard of Hradcany Castle in Prague newly appointed administrator of Protectorate reviews guard of honour and then indoors is introduced by Staatsminister Karl Hermann Frank to leading members of the NSDAP, State and Wehrmacht. Dr Frick next receives President of the Czech government in the Protectorate Dr H cha, who in 1939 placed the fate of Bohemia and Moravia in the hands of the Führer and who now introduces members of his government standing in the ornate coronation hall to the new Reichsprotektor. Uniformed dignitaries, and a row of Czech men in traditional costume, fill the Spanish hall where Reichsminister Dr Lammers, on behalf of the Führer, appoints Dr Frick to his new office; Frick mounts the podium and reportedly thanks the Czechs for their cooperation in the past and outlines their tasks for the future. II. Hitler receives Bulgarian Prince Regent and Minister President. Hitler stands on platform of station at his headquarters at Wolfsschanze, together with von Ribbentrop, Keitel, Bormann and Jodl, awaiting arrival for talks of members of Bulgarian Regency. Train pulls in and Prince Cyril and Minister President Filov alight and are greeted by Hitler and his companions. III. Hitler Youth naval training. At a Hitlerjugend naval training camp on a lake in Southern Germany, where HJ members are checked for suitability as naval officers, youths learn to tie knots and after classroom instruction in sailing and practical training in semaphore proceed to rig and sail dinghies. Youths are previously addressed onshore by Kapitänleutnant Töniges, holder of the Knights Cross with Oak leaves and a notable S-boat commander. IV. Goering visits anti-bomber units in Western Germany. Reichsmarschall arrives by car at an airfield and together with Generaloberst Loerzer and Generalmajor Galland inspects Luftwaffe personnel drawn up on parade. Goering then stands listening to aircrew surrounding him and assures himself of the state of air defences and the preparedness for action of his units. Fighter pilot Major Graf, holder of highest bravery award, and Generalfeldmarschall Milch are picked out by camera and commentary. Goering presents award to airman, giving him a friendly pat on the shoulder, and chats with a wounded fighter pilot, then looks through a gunsight. Airmen standing in circle listen to their commander-in-chief "personally giving instruction". Goering then walks across airfield in conversation with Professor Messerschmitt, flanked by Loerzer. Close-up of Reichsmarschall's standard. Goering then looks inside the cockpit of a Messerschmitt Bf 110 "fitted with new equipment for night fighting (radar)". Later he is filmed resting by roadside in country before talking to inhabitants (smiling female) of the emergency air zone and accepting posy from girl, with Galland in background. Tour continues with visit to armaments works, where Goering looks through screen at furnace, and to mining area where he stands surrounded by men and smiling women. Coverage of tour concludes with Reichsmarschall's visit to a badly bombed town (no visible damage) in Western Germany, where he is seen emerging from a building, a public figure of apparently great popularity. V. Repatriation of German prisoners of war. Hospital ship with funnel bearing Red Cross marking arrives in Stettin bringing home wounded German prisoners and medical personnel who have been exchanged for British prisoners. Girls in Bund deutscher Mädel uniform line the quayside and throw posies to men, who are mobbed by women when they disembark. Another ship, with bold marking FREIGELEIT (safe passage) on hull, approaches French port after voyage from Oran. Band plays on board before nurses of German Red Cross welcome men ashore with posies. Stretcher cases disembark first, then repatriated men, who for years have suffered the bitterness of captivity and who are now coming back for real care in their homeland, scribble brief letters to their relatives. Men include Army medical personnel. (End of Reel 1) VI. Homecoming of U-181 after longest cruise of war. Crew man deck as U-181, with flaking paintwork, victory pennons hoisted and figure 105812 painted on conning tower, approaches port flanked by tree-covered slopes (Bordeaux). Military band plays on shore for homecoming reception, filmed by naval cameraman with large tripod camera. Kapitän zur See Rosing, Flag Officer for U-boats West, awards Iron Crosses to crew members, simultaneously congratulated by their commander Korvettenkapitän Lüth, the first holder in the Navy of the Knights Cross with Swords and Diamonds. Officers and men of U-181 then attend mess ceremony to celebrate homecoming; tall Korvettenkapitän with Knights Cross (Flotilla commander?) proposes toast by drinking straight from beer bottle, following U-boat tradition. Post is next distributed to sailors, who compare enclosed photos of offspring and pets, and eat bunches of grapes. Men afterwards have beards shaved by barber. VII. Hitler presents medals to top U-boat commanders. Korvettenkapitän Lüth (U-181), Korvettenkapitän Topp (U-552), Korvettenkapitän Reinhard Suhren (U-564) and Korvettenkapitän Gysae (U-177), accompanied by Konteradmiral PostBUBO, walk through wooded grounds of Wolfsschanze to receive respective awards from Hitler at informal indoor ceremony: Knights Cross with Swords and Diamonds, Knights Cross with Oak Leaves, Knights Cross with Swords and Knights Cross with Swords. VIII. Hitler receives Luftwaffe ace Hauptmann Nowotny. Hitler welcomes fighter ace to his headquarters at Rastenburg and hands him the box containing his recently awarded Knights Cross with Swords and Diamonds. Führer then invites Nowotny to an informal chat; smiling ace beams at camera (studio shot). IX. German forces capture Kos. Animated map of Eastern Mediterranean. Joint operation by three services on 3 October shows Stukas flying towards island before strafing coastal positions and bombing larger targets, and small naval forces at sea, including S-boat with runic 7 emblem on bow. RAF intervention by fighter-bombers (Hurricanes?) which release bombs off coast and strafe sea near German vessels fails to halt landing. Germans come ashore under cover of darkness and surprise 3,000 Badoglio troops and 1000 British servicemen. German artillery sets enemy munitions dump ablaze before German motorised forces enter village where locals wave. Swastika flag now flies over castle and a mosque minaret is visible. Italian prisoners of war who survived the reportedly bloody losses of battle walk by; on a captured airfield Fiat CR 42 and RAF Hurricane stand abandoned. Meanwhile British prisoners await transportation to the mainland. X. German ground and air forces repel Russian attacks. Animated map of Eastern Front from Vitebsk to Zaporozhe. Tough defensive fighting by Germans in Central or Southern sector of Eastern Front is illustrated by bold German counterstrokes to push Russians back to their start points. Hummel Sdkfz 165 moves up slope and grenadiers advance across field under fire, firing Pak, machine guns and mortars. Injured or dead lie in open. Attack continues with Pzkpfw VIs moving forward, heavy Pak firing and Nebelwerfers in action, with explosions in the near distance. Stukas attack enemy tanks and trucks with cannon fire, scoring direct hits (camera-gun film).
