- Description: I. State funeral of Generaloberst Korten. Funeral at Tannenberg Memorial of Luftwaffe Chief of Staff who died from injuries sustained during ruthless attempt on Führer's life is attended by Goering, who offers condolences to widow and relatives before delivering funeral address praising Korten's soldierly qualities. Guard of honour is mounted by company of Panzergrenadier-Division Grossdeutschland. Doenitz and Keitel also attend ceremony, which concludes with Goering laying Hitler's wreath. II. Hitler visits Wehrmacht Staff officers injured in Bomb Plot explosion. Hitler speaks at bedside to Generalmajor Scherff, Oberstleutnant Borgmann, Kapitän zur See Assmann, Konteradmiral von Puttkammer and General der Infanterie Buhle, then leaves hospital to cheers of crowd outside, mainly women. Evidence of Hitler's own injuries are wool in his right ear and his use of left arm to acknowledge cheers. III. Party, State and Wehrmacht officials congratulate Hitler after the failure of the Bomb Plot. Hitler walks with Dr Morell (in grounds of Wolfsschanze?) towards his top colleagues and shakes hands with Funk, Sauckel, Speer, Dr Saur and Dr Lammers. Keitel stands smiling in background. Other leading figures of the regime who stand round chatting in small groups are: Himmler, Generaloberst Schörner, SS-Gruppenführer Fegelein; Goering; Goebbels; Generaloberst Guderian with Himmler (rear view); Goebbels talking to Reichsleiter Bormann and Generaloberst Jodl whose head remains bandaged after injury on 20 July. Goebbels has been appointed at Goering's suggestion to be Reich Plenipotentiary for Total War Production. IV. Oberst Remer expresses his loyalty to the State. Commander of Wachbattalion Berlin, who as Major halted attempted treason of small clique in Berlin on 20 July, addresses (live) his men on parade, declaring that soldiers have a political duty to follow "our National Socialist idea" and that "we shall carry out this duty in all circumstances until final victory". Parade ends with marchpast under Brandenburg Gate. V. Civilians parade in Gau of South Hanover-Brunswick. Members of the SA, Landwacht (wearing white armbands) and other organised groups (including miners?) march together through one of the towns of the region past Gauleiter Lauterbacher and Deputy Commanding General of Wehrkreis XI in display of military preparedness by all sections of society. VI. Knut Hamsun inspects U-boat during his visit to Germany. 85-year old Norwegian author and friend of Germany goes below in U-boat and looks through periscope before emerging on deck, assisted by young blonde. VII. Germans lay waste Russia during retreat. Animated map of Eastern Front from Narva to Jassy. Past month since start of big Bolshevik offensive is admitted to have been difficult, over film of Germans crossing steel bridge with town blazing in background and comment that war is compelling Germany to destroy all that she had built up since Soviet retreat. Two Pzkpfw Vs pass by, one towing the other with turret reversed. Newly arrived infantry march smiling past towards main battle line, with Russian onion-domed church in background, while refugees on carts pass by in other direction. 5cm Pak covers withdrawal road. Railway track is destroyed by sleeper plough and dynamite; Teller mines are laid on railway embankment and covered over. Over big explosions and large blaze commentary states that all important military buildings are being destroyed. (End of Reel 1) VIII. Newly arrived heavy weapons go into action on Eastern Front. At railhead behind front lines, flatcars carrying Pzkpfw Vs and IVs are unloaded for immediate despatch to the front, together with Pzkpfw VIs. Knights Cross tank commander briefs his men over map.
