- Summary:
- Description: I. Tenth anniversary of Hitler Youth Landdienst. Retrospective film of instructional scenes at teaching farm in Alpine village (Kuckelbach?) where members of the Hitlerjugend and Bund deutscher Mädel, mostly from towns, learn farming skills which prepare many for later work as Wehrbauer (settler farmers ?). Boys emerge from farmhouse to wash in well and then together with girls learn how to milk cows. Boys receive mechanical instruction on tractor, valuable in retrospect for military service, and with girls learn about animal care and crops. Boys then sharpen scythes and harvest on hillside. II. Old men and women workers exemplify Total War Effort. Long before introduction of Total War regulations, hundreds of thousands of Germans were doing more than duty required. Men and women arrive at work; inside armaments factory seventy year old who has been bombed out and has lost son in action does heavy work with cables; in same firm elderly woman who has lost two sons killed finishes cable with paint. At vintners to the Wehrmacht two old women work full day washing and labelling wine bottles (Devle Vino). Another man, almost seventy and having lost his son and daughter-in-law in war, works as fitter. Elsewhere at a training school young girl learns how to cut men's hair. III. Display of ersatz handicrafts made from straw. At factory display women show household objects and fashion objects (bags, mats, hats) made from straw. Maize leaves are soaked for easier working into ersatz items. IV. German volunteers join up. With garrisons throughout Germany open to receive volunteers as well as men released under Total War conditions from armaments industry and other parts of economy, young men arrive with suitcases and smiling outside modern barracks marked with slogan "To believe, to fight, to win". Recruits stand to attention, then are handed uniforms, rifles and blank ammunition. Next day they form up on parade and learn to march, all apparently happy. (End of Reel 1) V. German forces evacuated by sea from France disembark. Animated map of Western Front from Arnhem to Belfort. Despite German setbacks in France, enemy has reportedly learnt that the military leadership is fully in command of the situation on the Western frontier of the Reich. Disorganised mass of trucks, horses and guns litter harbour area after unloading. At sea on board Marinefahrprähm marked Amigo, with 2cm Flakvierling elevated ready for action, convoy of other transport ferries and vessels sails in "disciplined withdrawal" from harbours of Northern France and Belgium. Ashore large paint-camouflaged ambulance waits arrival of approaching ferry; guns and wounded are unloaded from vessel and stretchers placed in ambulance. Elsewhere air alarm causes pontoon bridge to be obscured by smokescreen; French Citroën car and Red Cross car are driven ashore. Smoke covers Belgian town during Anglo-American air raid carried out without regard for the population. VI. Finnish refugees follow withdrawing German forces. Animated map of Northern Europe including Finland. After collapse of Finnish leadership, characterless weaklings who betrayed their brave people, German forces march along forest road disengaging from the Kandalaksha Front and foiling Bolshevik plan to cut them off. Finnish refugees again face same tragedy as whole world had sympathy for in Winter 1939, as film shows peasants fleeing with loaded carts and animals. According to reports from Sweden fear of Bolshevik rulers has greatly increased numbers of Finns making for Swedish border; refugees, including Lapps, are seen loading possessions onto goods train, which then moves off. VII. German forces withstand Soviet attack in Courland. Animated map of Eastern Front from Tilsit to Jassy. Nebelwerfer fire from edge of wood, grenadiers digging in against air attack and knocked out StuG III by roadside show part of decisive stand by German forces in face of Soviet breakthrough attempt in Courland. Huge enemy losses in seven days include US-provided Studebaker truck. Germans launch counterattack against Soviet armour: StuG III emerges from wood, with paratroops seated on top holding Panzerfausts ready to destroy Russian T-34; paratrooper and Gebirgsjäger together; firing Panzerbüchse (training film, men lie in foreground) and examining shell holes in destroyed T-34. Over montage of Pzkpfw Vs along road, commentary picks up reported British statement that the Allies are not fighting the Germany of 1918 but an absolutely determined nation.
